A young mother is missing after she dived into a river to rescue her daughter and niece, but never returned to shore.
Brenda Durán, 30, was with her family along the San Joaquin River in Newman, California, on Thursday night when the children started having trouble.
She and her 14-year-old son jumped into the river around 6:30 pm on Thursday and managed to get her 11-year-old daughter and niece to safety.
“While trying to help her daughter, Duran was also struggling to stay afloat,” the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office said.

Police in several cities used divers, drones and helicopters to search the area as the family searched by kayak, paddle board and on foot.
‘Duran’s son and daughter managed to get out of the river safely, but Durán did not. The two minors were immediately treated by ambulance personnel at the scene.
Durán never reappeared and hours of searching Thursday night and again on Friday found no trace of her.

“She is a very prosperous person, always smiling, never gives up and very compassionate,” said her husband Jamie Aguilar.
The search was stopped at 11 pm that night due to safety and visibility concerns, but resumed on Friday and Saturday morning.
