A millionaire investor who retired at the age of 40 traded his $1.5 million mansion for a night behind bars after he allegedly swore at police during a roadside stop.

Peter Stanley Southgate, 42, appeared in the Brisbane Arrest Court on Saturday after being detained overnight after he allegedly used offensive language when he was detained in the early hours of the morning.

The former law practice manager faced one count of disorderly conduct and three counts of breaching bail on other charges.

Southgate’s lawyer, Emma Higgins, said they would contest that her client had used “offensive language” towards police and intended to request evidence from officers’ body cameras.

Ms Higgins said the three counts of breaching bail conditions related to allegations she failed to report bail, the mail reports.

He said Southgate had obtained a medical certificate from March 25 to 27 during a medical appointment on March 28.

Southgate is out on bail by the Supreme Court, which requires him to undergo urine testing for the presence of drugs.

Last week, Southgate pleaded guilty to violating his bail by returning a positive swab sample due to drug use, Higgins said.

Acting Magistrate Bain suggested that “perhaps alcohol is a problem”.

Higgins said her client, who she said had been able to retire early after making good investments, probably had a drug addiction.

“It is not a question of honor, but rather his history suggests that drugs are involved,” he told the judge.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Matt Kahler told the court Southgate’s alleged “drug of choice” was ice.

Acting Magistrate Bain granted Southgate bail on condition he live at his $1.5 million Gordon Park home in Brisbane’s north.

Southgate must also report on bail to Stafford Police Station four days a week and comply with a curfew between 8 p.m. and 6 p.m.

He must obtain a doctor’s referral for drug advice and is due to return to the Brisbane Magistrates Court on April 24.
