A cafe owner has revealed a “cost-saving secret” that everyone should know – and which helps some save more than $1,000 a year.

Talkativefrom Victoria, runs the popular café ‘The Agile Grumpy‘ with his sister and has been in the hotel industry for years.

Despite her experience, Gabby was still surprised that Australian cafes had an unspoken $3 surcharge for iced drinks, even though they’re easier to make than hot coffee.

He recently shared a ‘hack’ on TikTok where he brings his own ice and milk in a glass. Then all you need to order is a double shot of espresso.

“It’s easier to make an iced latte than a regular latte,” Gabby said. ‘I don’t know why it’s more expensive. I don’t write the rules.’

She went on to explain that she uses the trick herself as a barista.

“It will save you a lot of money,” Gabby said.

‘Take some milk and some ice in a cup, order a double espresso that costs less than $4, and then pour it in the milk and ice.

‘Now you have your iced latte! That’s it, there’s nothing more than an iced latte.

The barista also revealed that you can ask for caramel or vanilla syrup in the espresso if you want a sweeter flavor.

“In New Zealand, iced cups and lids cost twice as much as hot cups and lids,” one barista explained in the comments. “That’s why ours tend to be more expensive.”

Some were skeptical of the trick.

‘Why not add the espresso yourself at home if you’re already adding milk and ice from home?’ one asked.

But others were “obsessed” with the idea.

‘I’ve been doing this for icy long blacks for years! “$7 for iced coffee and water is crazy,” one woman said.

‘I paid $9 for an iced latte this morning. My coworkers’ medium cappuccino was $5.75,’ another shared.

‘This is great advice for people who drink alternative milks and go places where they don’t have them!’ one wrote.
