Sara Haines on Friday's episode of The View

The View’s Sunny Hostin has engaged in another heated on-air dispute with her co-host, Sara Haines, as the duo clashed again over the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling that frozen embryos are children.

Sara, 46, became visibly frustrated with mother-of-two Sunny on Friday’s episode of the ABC show as they argued about the viability of an embryo and whether or not it should be defined as “life,” and the blonde star of television told the latter: ‘If we are going to use science, let’s use scientific terms!’

“An embryo is the beginning of human life,” raged lawyer Sunny, 55, when referring to the conception of her two children, Gabriel and Paloma, through IVF, but Sara, a mother of three, would have none of it. of that and said goodbye. back that an embryo “was not a child.”

At one point, Ana Navarro joined the conversation and reminded Catholic Sunny ‘the church you are a member of is against IVF,’ and then yelled, ‘Let me finish,’ as the lawyer tried to cut her off midway. of the phrase. .

The delicate debate arose from the Alabama ruling that arose from a lawsuit brought by a group of IVF patients whose frozen embryos were destroyed in December 2020 when a patient removed them from a cryogenic storage unit and accidentally dropped them on the floor.

The Alabama Supreme Court has now ruled that the patient who mistakenly destroyed the embryos can be sued under the state constitution for wrongful death due to a minor act, which Sara strongly disagrees with.

‘A fertilized embryo is between three and five days old. It’s the size of a pin,” she said while using the tip of her pen as an example. ‘It is not alive outside the womb. It has no organs. It’s not a life yet. It is not viable until 24 weeks…’

Sunny tried to intervene and said, “You might not believe that.” There are at least 50 percent of Americans…’, but Sara wasn’t having any of that and fumed: ‘This is science, Sunny! This is science!’

“Fifty percent of Americans believe that a human embryo is a baby, and I’m one of them,” Sunny continued as Sara responded, “Well, let me check the terminology!” The embryo is an embryo until 10 weeks when it becomes a fetus. A fetus is not viable until 24 weeks.

‘If we’re going to use science, let’s use scientific terms, that’s what it is!’ Sara added when Sunny brought up her own IVF experience again, to which her co-host bluntly responded: ‘That doesn’t mean the facts change!’

“An embryo is the beginning of human life and I know this…” Sunny said, as co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin chimed in and asked, “But then why do you support abortion if you believe that?”

“Oh, I don’t support abortion,” Sunny responded. ‘I have said this over and over again. I believe that the government should not get involved in women’s reproductive health, but I believe that abortion is wrong and I also believe it, not only through my faith, but through my experience of having two embryos implanted in my body.

‘I have a 21-year-old son and a 17-year-old daughter and my life would not be the same without them. So if someone destroyed my embryos, I would feel like someone destroyed them…’ Sunny added, as Sara sarcastically replied, ‘Troublesome, but not minor.’

Ana, 52, then decided to share her thoughts and admitted: ‘I find many aspects of this court ruling disturbing. One is the science of it, but also that of putting God within the government. Look, this is not Iran, we are not a republic that depends on religious beliefs.

‘There is a separation between Church and State and one of the things that the majority opinion says is that “human life cannot be unjustly destroyed without incurring the wrath of the holy God.” Not everyone in this country believes in a holy God and you should not impose your beliefs on those people who do not believe in God!

‘It’s a key component of being an American. The other thing is, let’s think about what an embryo is, let’s think about what a fetus is, let’s think about what a baby is and one thing that bothers me is the change of goalposts.’

“Before it was about viability, then it was about heartbeats. Well, an embryo has none of them, it is not viable nor does it have a heartbeat. You know, you can freeze the sperm…’ Ana continued, as Sunny tried to interrupt her and talk about Christians.

‘Well, the Catholic Church you belong to is against IVF!’ Ana yelled at him and then added: ‘The Catholic Church does not rule the United States and we have a separation of Church and State!’

‘You can freeze sperm, you can freeze eggs, but you can’t freeze babies and bring them back to life!’ Ana added as the live studio audience applauded her.

Trying to have the last word, Sunny stated, “The one thing I think we’re all losing sight of is that this case happened because someone at an IVF clinic accidentally destroyed someone’s embryos.”

Sara remained silent as Ana spoke and shared her opinion on the Alabama court ruling.

The panel listened attentively as Ana (center) explained that eggs and sperm can be frozen but “you can’t freeze babies.”

‘That means that couple’s dreams… Manny and I, we lost our life savings trying to have children. [and] If someone came in and destroyed both of my embryos, it would have destroyed everything I had been working for for five years and that has to have a consequence.’

The rest of the panel agreed with Sunny, but Joy asked him: ‘Why does the consequence have to be in the law? Why not just prosecute the people who dropped it?

Ana then added, “But the ruling should have been negligence, not the embryos are babies, which then affects every woman and every couple in Alabama and is resulting in fewer lives.”

The heated argument came just a couple of days after Sunny and Sara clashed over the exact same issue during Tuesday’s show, with the latter suggesting that courts should “prosecute IVF like the rich’s abortion.”
