An Australian man has been photographed driving down a highway with his trash can at the back of his car – after forgetting to leave it outside his house.

The hilarious photo showed the driver pulling down a road in Yarra Valley, northeast of Melbourne, on Friday, unaware that he had also taken out the trash.

Rather than leave him on his street for the garbage trucks to collect, the man drove on with other motorists, amused by the strange addition to his car.

The man believed to be behind the wheel admitted to making the mistake after the photo was shared on a community Facebook page.

“Made all the way to Woollies…then I realised,” he said.

‘I’m glad I put new wheels on our box!!! She’s flying now.’

Another said they laughed when they saw him stop at the supermarket, while many admitted they, too, had driven off with their own rubbish in tow.

“I did that all the way to the library and I was like, ‘Yeah people are friendly today waving at me,'” someone said.

“At least I’m not the only one,” wrote another.

“It’s amazing how far some people go with them and they manage to stay on,” one added.

“My cousin did this. I wondered why the police stopped him.’
