Two women and a nine-week-old baby who died in a horrific accident were returning home after a funeral.

A 33-year-old mother, a 21-year-old woman and a baby died after their Toyota Hilux overturned on the Geraldton–Mount Magnet Road near Yalgoo in Western Australia at about 10.50pm on Saturday.

Three other men who were inside the van were rushed to Royal Perth Hospital with serious to critical injuries.

A 22-year-old man remained in critical condition Monday night, while the other two passengers, ages 22 and 43, were stable.

The family were returning to Geraldton after attending a funeral in Meekatharra when their car crashed. 7News reported.

Mount County Magnet President Jim McGorman said his wife had previously taught the two women who died in the crash and described the tragedy as “incomprehensible.”

“They went to school here; my wife taught two of the girls involved in the incident, so it’s pretty close to a lot of us,” he said.

Their deaths brought the state’s road accident toll for the year to the highest in more than a decade, with 114 people killed so far.
