Xfinity 500 driver pulls inspiration from NASCAR 2005 video game to secure spot in the championship

Xfinity 500 driver takes inspiration from NASCAR 2005 video game to travel around the outer wall at 130 mph – go from 10th to 5th place and earn himself a spot in the championship

  • Ross Chastain finished in 10th place in Sunday’s Xfinity 500 race, which would prevent him from progressing to the championship on November 6.
  • The racer grabbed fifth gear and sped away at 130 miles per hour, drove past the outer wall and let go of the wheel—and reached fifth at the end
  • Chastain said it’s a move he learned from the 2005 NASCAR video game

A race car driver in danger of being knocked out in Sunday’s Xfinity 500 race attempted a bizarre maneuver he learned in a racing game that took him from 10th to 5th place and earned a spot in the championship race this weekend.

Ross Chastain, 29, pulled a Hail Mary pass when he remembered the “wall ride” move he had on the Nintendo GameCube from NASCAR 2005.

The Chevrolet driver grabbed fifth gear and blasted off at 130 miles per hour, driving around the outer wall and passing the five cars in front of him, most notably driver Denny Hamlin holding onto fifth.

Chastain told reporters in a post-race interview that he wasn’t sure the move would work, but his brother had used the sneak attack to beat him when they played the game together as kids and he took a chance that paid off. threw off.

In an effort to avoid being eliminated from advancing to the championship race, a driver used a move from the 2005 NASCAR video game

The Xfinity 500 race kicked off at Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Virginia – a half-mile circuit built in 1947.

Sunday’s race marked the 75th anniversary of the season, which drew huge crowds to the stands.

With all eyes on, Chastain wasn’t about to miss a chance to advance to the championship race on November 6.

He was in 10th place on the last lap and thought it was worth a shot as he was already in a losing spot.

Chastain kept the race car in fifth gear, which provides the least pull to allow the greatest speed range, and drove as close to the wall as possible.

Chastain hugged the outer wall, let go of the steering wheel, and trusted that the wall would keep the car on the track—and to his and everyone’s surprise, it did just that.

In a post-race interview with NBC Sports, Chastain said, “I played a lot of NASCAR 2005 on the GameCube with Chad. [Chastain’s brother] growing up, and you can get away with it, and I never knew if it would really work. I did that when I was 8 years old.’

Chastain and Hamlin argued before Sunday’s race. It started on June 5 when Chastain hit Hamlin’s rear bumper.

Hamlin spiraled out of control and his car sustained some damage.

However, 15 laps later, Hamlin retaliated by slowing down in front of his opponent.

NASCAR intervened and told Hamlin that, “[Hamlin] made his point.’

But it looks like Chastain got the last word by outdoing his nemesis at the Virginia race.

However, it was not without consequences.

His vehicle was damaged by the demolition of the wall, but there was also a risk of a fatal crash if he hit an obstacle on the structure.

“Once I was up against the wall, I let go of the handlebars and just hoped I wouldn’t make it through the turn four gate or something crazy,” Chastain said. “But I was willing to do it.”

Chastin will not be racing at Phoenix Raceway for Championship 4 where he will face three other races and while he is not the favor of winning, he will make history for the video game movement in the Xifinity 500 race.
