A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Southern California and was widely felt throughout the region, the same day a 5.7 earthquake struck Hawaii.

The earthquake occurred at 1:47 p.m. at a depth of 15.5 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey.

From its epicenter in the rugged Santa Monica Mountains, the tremor was large enough to be felt from the coast of Malibu north to Bakersfield, south to San Diego and east to downtown Los Angeles.

Video shared to ABC7LA by a Westlake Village pet owner shows the moment his dog Butterscotch felt the tremor.

A man from Oxnard, California, posted images of his two dogs’ very different reactions to the earthquake.

Her two puppies were taking a nap when the earthquake hit, causing one of them to wake up while the other was still sleeping.

Jordan Lyubenov shared security camera footage with KTLA showing the walls, windows and furniture shaking inside his home in Playa Vista.

‘Oh Lord! It still continues. That was the biggest one we’ve had so far,” one woman said.

Jordan is heard accurately guessing the magnitude: “That was more than 4. That was close to 5.”

The tremor was initially recorded at a magnitude of 5.1, but was later reduced to 4.6 on the Richter scale.

According to the California Office of Emergency Services, about 91,000 people received alerts from the MyShake app.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, no significant damage was identified and no serious injuries were reported.

The United States National Tsunami Warning Center reported that no tsunami was caused.

Officials have advised residents to be prepared in case there is another earthquake, and the USGS warned there is a 1 in 20 chance of a larger earthquake in the coming days.

Friday is the 53rd anniversary of the 1971 San Fernando earthquake in Southern California, which was recorded at a magnitude of 6.6. Also known as the Sylmar earthquake, it killed 64 people and caused more than half a billion dollars in damage.

Hours earlier, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck south of Hawaii’s Big Island, shaking buildings and causing massive tremors across the state.

The earthquake occurred at an ocean depth of more than 22 miles about 1.5 miles off the coast of Kau.

Residents on the island of Oahu, more than 200 miles from the epicenter, reported strong shaking and some damage, although it is unclear whether the quake has caused any deaths or injuries.
