President Joe Biden played along with a joke about Air Force One with Steven Colbert and then made it clear that the historic plane will not be receiving Donald Trump’s preferred paint job.

The Late Show host asked about the famous plane near the end of his conversation with Presidents Biden, Obama and Clinton at a $25 million fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall.

‘You are all busy men, you have to go rule the world. Here is an important question. You three have been on Air Force One. You still have the keys, Mr. Biden. Did that make my Boeing right? Do those doors stay open? —Colbert asked.

‘Before we go up, will you give Pete Buttigieg a socket wrench to tighten the bolts?’ He joked, referring to manufacturer Boeing’s problems that included a door plug that fell off an Alaska Airlines plane in broad daylight.

‘I don’t sit by the door. I’m just kidding. “I shouldn’t even joke about that,” Biden responded.

“One thing I can tell you about Air Force One: we are not going to change the color,” he added. “Trump wanted to change the color.”

That led Obama, who added Biden to his list in 2008 and who has been advising him for re-election, to endorse his view. “Yes, we’re not going to do that,” Obama said.

Trump oversaw a redesign of Air Force One that would have included a new red, white and blue paint scheme. He even kept a model in the Oval Office.

The Biden administration revoked the new paint colors in 2022 after a study showed that darker colors would have led to higher temperatures and required additional cooling components, which in turn would increase costs.

Under current plans, the new modified Boeing 747-8s that will serve as the next-generation presidential aircraft will maintain the same seafoam blue color as dates back to the John F. Kennedy era.
