The update, called iOS 17.5.1, was quietly released by Apple and also contains “major bug fixes,” according to the tech giant.

Apple released iOS 17.5.1 in response to a strange bug that caused some users’ images to resurface, years after they were deleted.

“This update provides important bug fixes and addresses a rare issue where photos that experienced database corruption could reappear in the Photos library even if they were deleted,” Apple explains in the update description.

By default, Apple’s Photos app has a “Recently Deleted” folder, which saves deleted images and videos for 30 days.

However, after downloading the previous software update, iOS 17.5, several users reported images and videos deleted months or even years ago reappearing.

One added: ‘A photo from June 2023 reappeared in my iPhone photo library. I’m sure, because in April 2024 I transferred all my photos/videos to a computer and then cleaned all the photos/videos on the iPhone (including the trash). I don’t use iCloud Photos.’

And one vented: ‘Some photos from a few years ago have returned to me. It’s really shocking. They’re actually in the recent images and that’s what worries me.’
