An Australian burger chain has launched the country’s spiciest burger, and it’s so spicy they needed government permission to launch it.
Burger Urge’s $35 Scorpion Death Wish burger will soon be available at its 39 outlets including the Gold Coast, Cairns, Glendale NSW and Wodonga VIC.
The burger is made with a bright red bun, two shredded beef patties, Moruga Scorpion chili puree, a dash of scorpion death wish sauce, jalapenos, cheese, red onion, lettuce, tomato and an Asian forest scorpion edible.
The importation of the latter required permission from the federal government.
The Moruga chili comes from Trinidad and is five times hotter than the humble habanero chili.

Paul Bosland, director of the Chile Pepper Institute in New Mexico, USA, describes the experience of eating this particular chile as “not bad at first,” but then the spiciness “builds up and builds up” until it becomes “pretty disgusting”.
On Saturday, June 15 and Saturday, June 22, customers will be able to test their stomachs in the Scorpion Death Wish Challenge.
To participate, competitors must be 18 years or older and register online. Goggles and gloves are provided, but the burgers themselves are limited, so they are served on a first-come, first-served basis.
While chili is loaded with vitamin C and has anti-inflammatory health benefits, the downside of consuming too much can be nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.
Those thinking about preparing their food channel for the challenge might consider keeping one (or three) of Burger Urge’s popular and less controversial drinks on hand.
Scorpion also has the potential to improve health, and is used by traditional Chinese medicine practitioners to treat pain and spasms.
Many burger fans stayed away, with one exclaiming, “You’re on your own with this.”
However, some made no exception to the extreme elements of the burger and just wanted to know if there was a gluten-free or halal option available.
Those thinking about taking on the challenge with their stomach might consider keeping one of Burger Urge’s less controversial drinks on hand, like their Peanut Butter and Nutella Shake with Whipped Cream, to tone down the flavor.
