Three teenagers who allegedly broke into two houses armed with machetes before stealing a car have been arrested after a wild police chase.

Police said three criminals armed with machetes carried out two house break-ins and an attempted carjacking in Mickleham at around 6.30am. No one was injured in the attacks.

The three teenagers were chased by police as they drove an allegedly stolen Nissan Pathfinder through Wyndham Vale, Werribee and Melbourne’s north-west suburbs, reaching speeds of up to 200km/h.

The chase, which involved up to 12 police cars and a helicopter, ended in the car park of the Sunbury Square shopping center at around 10am.

“The three occupants exited the vehicle outside a shopping center where they were arrested by officers from the Critical Incident Response Team with assistance from the Air Wing,” police said.

Police said a 16-year-old Wyndham Vale boy, a 15-year-old Ivanhoe girl and a 15-year-old Windsor girl were in custody.

Louisa, a shopper at Sunbury Square shopping centre, gave live details of the teenager’s arrest on radio station 3AW.

Looks like they have someone on the ground. They have someone in handcuffs,’ she said.

“One is on the ground handcuffed, they have zip ties and there is another one higher up, sitting in the ditch.”

He said around 20 police officers were at the scene and more were on the way, while police helicopters circled overhead to find the van that had been abandoned.
