Richard Madeley believes the corporal punishment he received as a schoolboy had a “definite sexual element”.
Madeley, 67, reflected on her childhood before an interview with Earl Spencer on Tuesday’s edition of Good Morning Britain.
Spencer, 59, was on hand to talk about her new autobiography, A Very Private School, in which she details the abuse she suffered at Maidwell Hall in Norfolk, one of the most prestigious boarding schools in England.
Discussing the book, Madeley was moved to share his own experience of being caned as a pupil at Coopers’ Company, an all-boys primary school in east London, with co-presenter Susanna Reid.
“This continued until the 1980s,” he said of the archaic practice, which was banned in all British public schools in 1987. “In the late 1960s I was regularly spanked at school and yes, there were certainly sexual elements.” On it. ‘

Madeley attended Coopers’ Company, an all-boys primary school in London, before moving to a different secondary school in Brentwood, Essex (Madeley pictured with her mother, Mary).
Susanna Reid was visibly shaken as her co-host spoke about her school years ahead of an interview with Earl Spencer on Tuesday’s edition of the show.
A dismayed Reid added: “Honestly, horror, horror, in a place where people are supposed to look after you because your parents aren’t there.”
Spencer, the younger brother of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, alleges he was groomed and taken advantage of by a school matron while attending Maidwell.
“We were totally disconnected and at the mercy of pedophiles and sadists,” he said. “He was so caught up in emotions that he didn’t know what was happening.
“She would dress me up, give me cookies, and come back looking for sexual things.”
Responding to Spencer’s claims in a statement, Maidwell Hall said: “We are sorry this was your experience.” It is difficult to read about practices that, unfortunately, were sometimes considered normal and acceptable at that time.
‘Almost all aspects of school life have evolved significantly since the 1970s. At the heart of the changes is the protection of children and the promotion of their well-being.’
Madeley previously spoke about her own experiences during an interview with the The Telegraphclaiming that two teachers who were having an affair watched every time he was spanked.
“The music teacher had the responsibility of administering the cane,” he said. He was having an affair with the English teacher and she walked in when it was my turn to get spanked.

“Where Coopers had been rough and violent, with physical punishments and strange relationships between teachers, I entered this civilized, calm and calm environment.”
