The departure comes just a week after announcing that he will return to Broadway to appear in a star-studded revival of Thornton Wilder’s play Our Town.
Holmes has been cast as Mrs. Myrtle Webb in the show’s next production, which will feature 28 performers, according to People.
The film and television star, who recently attended a star-studded theater gala, will also be joined by Jim Parsons and Zoey Deutch, the latter of whom will be making her Broadway debut.
Our Town is set in the early 20th century and focuses on the lives of several families in Grover’s Corner, New Hampshire.
The play initially premiered in 1938 and was first produced on Broadway that same year, after which it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Our Town has been revived on and off Broadway several times, and artists such as Henry Fonda, Penelope Ann Miller and Montgomery Clift have participated in several productions.
In 1940 a film based on the play was released starring William Holden and Martha Scott.
The most recent Broadway revival of the play took place in 2002 with a cast led by Paul Newman.
Previews for the upcoming show are scheduled to begin on September 17, with the production opening on October 10 at the Barrymore Theatre.
The new production of Our Town will mark Holmes’ first time returning to Broadway in more than a decade.

Holmes spoke with Variety the following month and spoke about what she felt was the main difference between working in films and plays.
‘When you’re on set, it’s you, the other actors and the director. For me there’s always a feeling that you want to please the director,” she said.
‘The public is different. You’re not trying to please them. We are sharing the same experience,’ she added.
