This comes after she recalled her early years in an interview on Time titled The words I use to encourage self-love.

The 36-year-old cover girl has been a prominent face in the world of modeling and the body positivity movement.

But when she was a child, it destroyed her that she didn’t look like a tall, thin blonde girl.

And the mermaid felt that the way her teachers looked at her was horrible. She, too, was not thrilled when other children called her “big.”

Meanwhile, she was flying to New York City on weekends to work as a model, as her career was already taking off.

But it was her mother who comforted her with words of wisdom when she told Ashley that one day she would change the world with her fuller figure.

Graham’s successful career led her to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue in 2016, make the TIME100 list in 2017, and recently publish her own children’s book titled A Kid’s Book About Beauty.

Graham exclusively shared with TIME about the first moments he encountered beauty.

She was made fun of as a child for having a body that was not conventionally attractive.

Graham on the time she confronted the notion of beauty as a child.

‘I was 9 years old when I was first confronted with the idea of beauty. He had always been a bigger, burlier, more athletic boy. People told me he was “big and strong,” she shared.

‘But this girl, a stranger I saw one day at Target, was different.

‘She had long, thin legs, a flat belly and grown breasts. Her blonde hair fell perfectly over her shoulders.

‘I was very young and yet I knew: she was pretty. I wanted to be that. I didn’t know what modeling was back then (I didn’t even know what fashion was), but I wanted what she had. I wanted to attract attention.

Modeling was not easy.

Labels were attached to it from the beginning.

But it came with a warning. I was “pretty and big” or “pretty for a big girl” or “pretty from the neck up.” There has always been that double label: pretty and plus size. At school, plus size was not cool, but pretty was interesting.

“My teachers would tilt their heads and squint at me, searching for whatever the industry was seeing,” he added.

‘I would fly to work as a model in New York City over the weekend with my mother and return to school to face the insults on Monday.

‘I wish I had a mentor back then, someone to help me understand my value and purpose as a model. But there was no one I could look up to and emulate, no one who had been through the same challenges to hold my hand and tell me that none of the noise mattered, that I just needed to keep moving forward.

Fortunately, Graham had a smart mother who could see the future.

“One day I finally called my mom crying, looking in the mirror and feeling like I couldn’t do it anymore,” she shared.

‘She told me something I will never forget: your body is going to change someone’s life. You have to move on… That was the “aha” moment for me.’

Ashley added: ‘My mom helped me understand my purpose. As she let her words sink in, I thought about how for years she had let other people tell me who I was. She needed to define my worth for myself. And she could use words, like my mom did, to do it.”

He also talked about the influence he has had on the world.

“My body has changed things for other people, and knowing that is an incredible honor and an incredible pressure,” she said.

‘I always wanted women to see themselves in me, to know that any validation I get is equally theirs.

“But sharing my body with the world has also meant that the people I set out to represent sometimes take ownership over my appearance. We all change.

‘I was 28 years old when I appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimmer. I am now 36 years old and a mother of three children.’

Graham told them: ‘My body looked different when I was pregnant and it looks different now that I’ve given birth to my three children.’

‘Losing weight after having children has generated comments from people who feel betrayed by the changes they see.

“I never want women to think I’m leaving them behind and at the same time, all I can do is accept the journey I’m on and focus on the things that make me feel strong and empowered, which is all I do “. we can all do.

‘Maybe I’ll lose weight, maybe I’ll gain it. This is my body and I am incredibly proud of everything he has accomplished.”
