Senior dog Fiona, 13, finally adopted by couple after spending 11 years in shelter

A 13-year-old dog who spent 11 years in a shelter waiting for his forever home was finally adopted Friday by a couple in Greenfield, Wisconsin.

Fiona, originally named Fergie, had spent more than a decade at Second Chance Shelter in Boaz, Alabama, before she was brought to Albert’s Dog Lounge in Wisconsin.

She was then adopted by the animal-loving Saskowski family and spent most of her life in a shelter.

Wanda McGee, who has brought hundreds of dogs from Alabama to Wisconsin through the rescue initiative, said Fiona was brought to the shelter after being picked up by animal control workers.

speaking to WMVT, Ms McGee said: ‘I mean, it’s definitely a labor of love. You know, you sure don’t make any money doing this.

‘She came from animal control, and they had to catch her, actually, to catch her, and she was about a year old when we caught her.

“She was quite wild and [she] We recently started letting ourselves pet her.

Lindsey Decker, vice president of Albert’s Dog Lounge, said she looked at several different applications before deciding the Saskowskis would be the best fit for Fiona.

“He is only the third dog I have rescued that has spent almost his entire life in a shelter,” Mrs. Decker also said. WMTV.

‘I’m so happy, like my heart is about to burst for her. I’m very excited today. May she have a home like this amazing forever home.

Lindsey said she had a checklist and was looking for a family who could be home frequently, who already had other dogs and a fenced yard.

Speaking about how she came to adopt Fiona, Carrie Saskowski, from Wisconsin, said: “I saw her story online and was so overwhelmed by the sadness that she was at the shelter for so long.”

And no one would adopt her knowing how sweet she was. It was very sad for me and I thought, oh my God, could we have the best life together?

The Saskowskis, who had already adopted two dogs from Second Chance Shelter before welcoming Fiona, were touched by her story and were able to take her home to Greenfield.

Lindsey added: “This glorious garden, dog brothers, pet owners who will love her and give her the best last few years of her life.” She really couldn’t be happier.

Within minutes of arriving, Fiona began to settle into her new home.

“I really hope this opens people’s eyes to adopting seniors and knowing that they are wonderful pets, that you can have a wonderful life with them, and that they give you a lot,” Carried continued.

Albert’s Dog Lounge accepts senior, hospice and special needs dogs.

Decker says they are part of a population that is often overlooked, and many dogs are euthanized due to their old age.
