“I was talking to my sister yesterday and we both agreed on something: Sydney is really screwed,” he said. “I thought it was just that I realized that everyone is tired, everyone is stressed, everyone is angry, everyone is just over it.”

“It seems like everyone is nervous, whether on the road, in shopping malls, in the workplace with customers, everyone is nervous, irritable and rude,” Sonya continued.

“It’s almost like there’s no goodness anymore.”

Sonya said that now it seems like a rarity when someone acts kindly.

‘Are we so far away as a society where being nice is now rare?’ she asked.

‘I’ll literally be sitting on the bus or train and everyone will be looking at their phones. Everyone is weird, antisocial, angry, tired and stressed. I remember growing up when it was normal to talk. [and] socialize, even if it were a stranger.

‘That just disappeared. That Australian culture is gone. You no longer get on a bus and say ‘How’s your day partner?’ “It’s fucking weird.”

Sonya recounted a recent experience she had on a bus when she complimented another woman by telling her she liked her shoes.

However, the woman just stared and quickly said “thank you” before looking at her phone again.

“I just said, ‘I love your shoes,'” Sonya recounted, adding, “She looked at me like I had just said something absolutely crazy.”

The answer left her wondering if others know how to talk anymore.

‘Everyone is talking on the phone and no longer knows how to speak in real life. It’s like I’m supposed to be a fucking robot,” he said.

“To me, society is just strange, but Sydney is a bloody nightmare. “Everyone is angry, moody, irritable, stressed, and I don’t think anyone knows how to socialize.”

They’re just girls who live in the big city. It’s been like this for eons. When I return home to Brissie I immediately notice the friendliness of the customer service,” said one.
