Heavy rain is expected to hit large swathes of Australia as a series of weather systems usher in cold, wet conditions in parts of the country.
A low pressure system is forecast to develop off the coast of Perth on Tuesday, bringing a band of rain across south-west Western Australia.
A cold front is also forecast to bring rain to parts of New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania, and even some snow to high mountain peaks.
Showers and thunderstorms will develop in the western districts of Western Australia before spreading further south and east between Tuesday and Thursday.
Precipitation totals in the west and southwest of the state are expected to remain in the single digits.
Australia’s east coast and parts of the country’s southwest are forecast to be hit by heavy rain as a series of weather systems usher in cold, wet conditions.
However, some areas of the far southwest recorded cumulative totals ranging between 15 and 50mm at the end of the week.
Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said the wet weather is a welcome change for the state after enduring the driest seven-month period on record.
“While there will not be enough rain to completely eradicate the rainfall deficits of the past seven months, the wet weather will be a welcome change to the arid landscape,” Mr Domensino said.
Domensino explained that there was uncertainty regarding the resulting rainfall in eastern parts of Australia, but most forecast models agree that heavy rain will affect parts of New South Wales and Queensland.
“There is some uncertainty about the position of the lowest level and the resulting rainfall towards the end of the week,” Mr Domensino said.
“Weather patterns like this can bring several hundred millimeters of rain along the New South Wales coast and adjacent ranges.
“Most forecast models agree that heavy rain will affect parts of eastern New South Wales, with the potential for substantial falls in southern Queensland, and also western and central New South Wales.”
Domenisco warned that rain forecasts for individual locations may vary throughout the week, while severe weather warnings will be issued as days of heavy rain approach.

Rain is forecast in Brisbane from Monday until the weekend, with the wettest day being Saturday with up to 15mm of rain.
Maximum temperatures will remain around 20 degrees, while minimum temperatures will remain stable between 15 and 16 degrees during the week.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a moderate flood warning for Eyre Creek and a minor flood warning for the Georgina River.
However, no significant rainfall totals are expected over the next few days.
New south Wales
Sydney residents will feel a cooler change after Monday as the mercury drops from 27C to a high of 21C for the rest of the week.
Up to 15mm of rain is expected to fall on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by 20 and 35mm of rain on Thursday and Friday.
The weekend will see the heaviest falls, with up to 100 mm of rain on Saturday and Sunday.

Chances of rain are forecast for Monday and Tuesday in Canberra.
The middle of the week will remain dry before wet weather returns from Friday into the weekend, with up to 18mm of rain expected to fall over Saturday and Sunday.
The mercury will range between 16 and 18°C throughout the week, while minimum temperatures will remain in single digits.
Showers and thunderstorms will develop in New South Wales. Rainfall totals in the west and southwest of the state are expected to remain in the single digits, with some areas of the southwest receiving cumulative totals ranging between 15 and 50 mm by the end of the week.
Western Australia
Temperatures in Perth are expected to remain around 20C throughout the week, with the mercury reaching a high of 28C on Wednesday and Thursday.
Rain is forecast from tomorrow to Thursday, with heavier falls of up to 15mm and a chance of a thunderstorm predicted for Tuesday.
The wet weather will improve on Thursday, allowing for a dry weekend.
Victory
Melbourne will see partly cloudy weather from Tuesday to Saturday, with temperatures reaching a high of 18C and a low of eightC.
One or two showers are forecast for Saturday, but rainfall will remain light, with up to 1mm of rain forecast.
Tasmania
Hobart residents are expecting cloudy but dry weather, with no rain forecast for the week and maximum temperatures hovering around 10 degrees.
Northern Territory
Meanwhile, Darwin residents will be in for a warm and sunny week as temperatures are forecast to reach 35C from Monday to Sunday.
South Australia
Adelaide is also forecast for a dry week, with partly cloudy weather forecast from Monday to Wednesday and mostly sunny from Thursday to Sunday.
Temperatures are forecast to remain stable throughout the week, with a low of eight degrees and a high of 21C.
