A clip has emerged on social media that appears to explain why PSG star Kylian Mbappé was substituted at half-time in the match against Monaco on Friday.

The forward will leave the French team in the summer on a free transfer and join Real Madrid after a seven-year love-hate relationship with his current team.

After signing a new contract at the end of the 2021-22 season, Mbappé had regularly expressed frustration over a series of developments at the club, and club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi had pleaded with him not to leave for free.

However, this will almost certainly be the case in the summer, and Mbappé left his current teammates behind in the Ligue 1 match, with the score 0-0 at half-time.

The highlight of his 45-minute cameo showed why PSG coach Luis Enrique dropped the Frenchman after struggling in the first half.

Kylian Mbappé was substituted at half-time and substituted early for the second time in as many games.

Mbappé found himself dispossessed of the ball and lost his balance on numerous occasions, and made some questionable shooting decisions when he had better options in a forgettable half.

It is not the first time the 25-year-old has been substituted prematurely under Luis Enrique, with the former World Cup winner being substituted after 65 minutes in the draw against Rennes last week.

Mbappé left the locker room after changing clothes after the substitution on Friday night.

He was dressed all in black, including a cap, and was followed by photographers as he stopped to talk to fans in attendance, even posing for a selfie.

The match ended 0-0 in a fairly even match in terms of scoring opportunities despite the visitors dominating possession.

Speaking about the substitution, Enrique said: “I’ve been in football for quite a while, you should know that everything is important in this type of club. Sooner or later we will play without Mbappé, we have to get used to that.”

Enrique had hinted before the match that PSG would be a better team without Mbappe next year, as they look to finally put long-standing distraction over their future behind them.

“I know that if everything goes well, next season we will have a better team from all points of view,” Enrique said. ‘Offensively, defensively and tactically. I have no doubt about it.’
