Groceries took up most of this thrifty mother’s kitchen and included luxuries like ice cream and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

He explained that the photo had been taken almost two years ago, when he posted it on the Budget Friendly Meals Facebook page.

She admitted at the time that she thought she had done well with her budget and that the huge shopping load was a “nice haul.”

Many spoke out in the comments, with many stating that it would be impossible to get that many groceries for the $222 now.

One woman said she recently bought $200 worth of food and was surprised when it all fit into four paper bags.

Another said she spent about the same and got some “half-full bags” that “barely” lasted her and her two daughters a fortnight.

“I really hate this new normal and the anxiety of doing any type of grocery shopping,” she said.

Most people agreed that the store would cost them between $400 and $500 now, even if they shopped the specials and opted for budget options.

“Meat, milk and fruit alone would cost you $100 nowadays,” said one.

People said that now just fresh food and milk would cost $100.

The mother decided to go through the image and change the price of each item to see how much they would really cost, and it seemed like people were close to her estimates.

“Hi everyone, well it took me a while but I changed the price of each item in my photos, I didn’t have Aldi prices, I used mainly own brand Coles items,” she said.

“The figure I got was $437.85, a huge increase on the $222.20 spent just two years ago and many items now weigh much less and cost twice as much.”
