A TikTok star was left red-faced this week after interviewing Hollywood director Baz Luhrmann on the street without knowing who he was.

Georgia Godworth was filming a vox pop on the streets of Newtown in Sydney when she encountered a man in a green leather shirt and decided to engage in an impromptu interview with him about dating.

Not knowing who the renowned director was, the content creator accidentally stumbled upon a very exclusive interview with Luhrmann, 61, about his marriage to Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin, 59.

Godworth said she felt humiliated when she uploaded the video to TikTok and discovered she had been speaking to the star, who directed the Hollywood blockbusters Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet and The Great Gatsby.

“I have no idea this was Baz Luhrmann,” he captioned the footage, which began with the famed director hilariously giving the cameraman lighting tips for the interview.

Despite the mistake, Luhrmann seemed to take it all in stride and enjoyed the unorthodox interview.

During the talk, she gave insight into her private and unique marriage to Martin.

The Great Gatsby director and his wife have been married for 27 years, and the award-winning production designer has worked on all of Luhrmann’s films.

“During that marital journey, the person I’m married to and I found our really genuine, authentic concept of what our mutual contract should be,” he told Godworth of their unique union.

“But I think the most important thing is that marriage is not so much about what exists between you and another person, but about announcing to other people that you love and care what the deal is.”

“My general philosophy is that if you care about someone and they’re your friend, but they fall in love with someone else or like someone, there has to be some degree of acceptance.”

At the end of the interview, Luhrmann told Godworth that he doesn’t normally “do interviews” but was “happy to be a part” of hers.

Godworth sarcastically said she felt “honored” to talk to him, although she still had no idea who he was.

Viewers of the video flocked to the comments to criticize Godworth for his complete ignorance of who he just spoke to.

“Please tell me you’re joking and that you knew exactly who he was,” one person asked, to which Godworth replied, “I really had no idea.”

Another wrote: ‘I feel like you shouldn’t work in media if you don’t know who Baz Luhrmann is. An insult to this genius.

‘This is really embarrassing for you. “How do you not know him or his legendary wife Catherine Martin?,” added a third.

Another said: “I don’t normally do interviews and you don’t even know who it was, I’m crying.”

While Godworth faced a number of criticisms for the interview, others jumped to his defense and many found the moment’s humor light-hearted.

“If you can tell who someone is and not recognize them,” one person wrote.

Another added: ‘I didn’t know what he looked like until now but I know who he is! Most of his work is behind the camera and (as he said in this video) he didn’t do interviews.

Someone else noted that it was “hilarious” to see Luhrmann telling the cameraman where to position himself for the best lighting.

“It tells you where to put the light and the camera angle,” they said.

One user commented: “I love how you side-eye him changing the camera angle while he’s just an Oscar-nominated director.”

Luhrmann and Martin, 59, are one of Hollywood’s most successful couples and have been married for almost three decades, but have recently been living separate lives.

Award-winning filmmaker Luhrmann was spotted at Taylor Swift’s concert in Sydney earlier this year, in the singer’s star-studded box alongside her NFL star boyfriend Travis Kelce, Katy Perry and fellow filmmaker Taika Waititi and his wife Rita Ora.

The couple recently moved into ‘a shack’ in the Miami Beach area, downsizing from a larger home they resided in after moving to the Glitter Strip in 2020 to make their sixth film, Elvis.

In a recent interview with The Australian’s Wish magazine, Martin opened up about being long distance with her husband.

She said the couple talk regularly on the phone when he is in New York and she stays at their seaside shack on the Gold Coast.

Martin says he enjoys the “work-life balance” on the Gold Coast, where he takes long morning walks on the beach every day and takes classes at his local Pilates studio.

“I called Baz this morning, I was walking on my way to Pilates and he was marveling at the weather, because it’s in New York,” she said in the interview.

Luhrmann was recently forced to put an end to split rumors after fans noticed uncanny similarities to the failed marriage of Australian actor Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness.

The director confirmed that the couple was still very much in love.

Luhrmann and Martin just saw their own children Lilly, 20, and William, 18, move house.

They’ve put their Gilded Age townhouse in New York on the market for $28 million as they downsize to their “empty nest” home in Australia.

“Since the pandemic and when we made the Elvis movie in Australia, our work has mostly kept us away from our base in New York City,” Luhrmann told the New York Post’s Gimme Shelter.

“We filmed Elvis entirely on the Gold Coast in Queensland and will continue to develop shows to film there.”
