From stunning cityscapes to misty mountains, these are the kind of photographs you’d expect to have been taken with a high-end camera – but they were actually all taken on smartphones.
Below is a selection of some of the best images and winning entries from the Mobile Photography Awards 2024.
The UK-based competition was launched this year by the British Photography Awards, in partnership with Samsung.
Photographs could be taken on any mobile device, with judges looking at six categories including: portrait, pet, night scenes, zoom photos, landscapes and food and drink.
Hugo Donnithorne-Tait, Director and Photographer of the BPA Awards, said: “As photography continues to develop as a medium, it is clear that the way people take and enjoy photos is also evolving.
This portrait image, titled My Dad and the Greedy Seagull, taken in Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland, was taken on a Samsung Galaxy G20 5G by Lorraine Poole, who said: “We were sitting in my car eating fish and chips for lunch when I noticed a big, greedy seagull looking at my dad through the sunroof.
“Today, more and more photos are being taken just because people have a high-end camera in their pocket when they need it. This means that many other life moments are documented.
“We are very proud to be able to launch these Mobile Photography Awards. Samsung has a fantastic history of innovation and pioneering new imaging technologies, so who better to co-host this new type of photography competition?
“Being able to award fantastic Galaxy S24 Ultras to competition winners and running mobile workshops means we can continue to transform people’s photography and continue to develop our craft alongside this amazing new technology. »
Capturing Heron Tower, London, this photo was taken with a Sony Xperia 1 V. The anonymous photographer explained: “A few months ago I had an idea to use a smartphone to take long exposures at night in the City of London’
Titled Two Heads, One Heart, the stunning photo was taken on a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in Hellesdon, Norwich, by father Dotun, who captured the image after his son fell asleep next to him.
An image of an Isle of Skye landscape, taken with an iPhone 14, by photographer Andrew Hoyle, who said: “Having gotten up before sunrise, most of the walk up to the Storr’s point of view was in almost total darkness. The weather went from foggy to snowy to high winds and I was pretty convinced my efforts were in vain. But patience paid off
Showing an adorable dog during bath time, this photograph won the Pet category at the Mobile Photography Awards. It was taken in Scotland by Ross Page, who used a Samsung S23 Ultra to capture the image titled Bath Night.
While flying over London, photographer Taiyo Fujiwara took this incredible photo using an iPhone 13 Pro Max. “The city lights of London created a stunning landscape,” said the photographer
Titled Hiking In The Clouds, this incredible image shows a mountainous landscape in Scotland, taken with a Huawei P30 Pro.
Margaret Jaszowska won the Food and Drink category at the UK’s Mobile Photography Awards 2024 after capturing this bright image of lemons and fresh juice using an iPhone 13 pro.
