There has been a worrying update in the desperate search for a New Zealand woman who has been missing in Bali for four days.

Kaya Awhitu flew to the Indonesian resort island last Thursday, October 3, but has not been heard from since Sunday.

But in a major update on Wednesday, Bali police revealed that Ms Awhitu had never stayed at the accommodation address she had been given.

Police had information that she was last seen at Rumah Surga Villa in Ubud, which is located near the world-famous Monkey Temple and Forest.

“New Zealand woman Kaya Awhitu never stayed at Rumah Surga Villa,” Ubud police chief Gusti Nyoman Sudarsana told Daily Mail Australia.

Police checked the villa on Wednesday morning and discovered that Ms Awhitu had never been a guest there.

“When we received information that she was last seen at Rumah Surga Villa, we have already registered at the villa,” Sudarsana said.

‘All guests staying at Rumah Surga Villa rent the villa on a monthly basis and all guests have stayed there since last year. There was no guest who rented the villa daily.

Police Chief Sudarsana added that many attempts are being made by the police and all related institutions to trace the last traces of Mrs Awhitu.

“Attempts to find Kaya Awhitu are still ongoing,” he said.

The update comes after the family of the missing woman in New Zealand raised the alarm.

‘This is not like her! We are very concerned,’ they wrote online.

“If anyone knows authorities in Bali we can contact for help, please send me a message.”

Adding to her family’s concern is the fact that Ms Awhitu has been active on Facebook Messenger but has not responded to any of their messages.

“We know there is activity on her messenger, but we feel it’s not her,” they said.

‘She may be having some downtime, but this is still unusual. Please let us know you’re okay, Mom.

Shar Roberts said Awhitu’s family became concerned after she was unable to meet her partner to head to their next destination on the island.

“They were supposed to meet on a barge to go to the next place and she didn’t show up,” he said in a video posted on Facebook.

‘He has returned to the villa where they were staying and everything is packed.

“We are really worried because she has not had contact with anyone since Sunday, especially her children.

“If anyone hears anything, they will punish you when we hear from you, but please let us know that your family and friends are really worried.”
