The world’s fattest cat tragically died just weeks after being sent to a pet weight loss camp.

Kroshik, which is Russian for “crumbs,” weighed a staggering 38 pounds when he was rescued from a hospital basement, where well-meaning staff fed him cookies and soup.

The strict diet and exercise regimen at the feline fat camp Kroshik was taken to was successful and the ginger tabby was finally able to walk again after losing 2.2 pounds.

Cheeky Kroshik even tried to escape the center once, but got stuck between the bars of a shoe rack, with an unfortunate photo showing his stomach touching the floor and face pressed against a plastic surgery clog.

Tragically, beloved Kroshik died suddenly at the diet center in Perm, Russia, on Saturday night.

His caregivers said on Sunday: “Yesterday Kroshik suddenly became ill. He began to choke. Until then, doctors had never noticed any signs of difficulty breathing in him.

‘We acted immediately: within half an hour Kroshik was already in the oxygen chamber.

‘Little by little his condition began to deteriorate. And even the resuscitation efforts of doctors could not help him. When he died, he was not alone. Until their last breath, the best doctors fought for their lives.’

Veterinarians said the cat had “multiple growths in the spleen and metastases to other internal organs,” but the exact cause of death will only be known later.

Kroshik had become a global celebrity because he underwent a strict diet and exercise routine at the fat loss center.

Caregivers on social networks: “For a long time we could not understand the reason for Kroshik’s incredible popularity, because we did nothing to somehow attract the media to the story….

“Later we realized that people around the world are so tired of bad news… We rejoice with you for every victory of Kroshik and appreciate his every step.”

They concluded: ‘Sometimes miracles don’t happen. Sometimes not even the strongest cats can cope with this situation.’

Korshik lived in the basement of a Perm hospital, where he is believed to have settled after being abandoned by his owners.

After being rescued, he faced a life of dieting and exercise while veterinarians attempted to reduce him to a healthier weight of 10 pounds.

Rehabilitation specialist Ekaterina Bedakova said her attempt to escape at the fat loss camp was actually a sign that she was slowly improving.

Video footage from the spotlight showed the clearly fed-up looking embitter being put through his paces on a treadmill.

Using a water tank to lessen the stress of his mass on his leg joints, Crumbs was seen reluctantly jogging around the track.

Other images showed how his belly had been shaved to facilitate drying after exercise sessions.

Tabby cats vary in what can be considered a healthy weight.

Experts say that between seven and 12 pounds is a good weight for a cat in general, although there are differences depending on the breed.
