World Cup: Gregg Berhalter reveals Gareth Southgate has ignored messages
‘I haven’t seen the blue checkmark’: USA boss Gregg Berhalter reveals his England counterpart Gareth Southgate IGNORED his WhatsApp messages ahead of World Cup showdown
USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter has revealed that England manager Gareth Southgate did not read his recent Whatsapp messages with his teams meeting at the World Cup.
The duo were in contact via Whatsapp on a regular basis, but the level of communication dropped ahead of the USA’s matchup with the Three Lions in Pool B on Friday.
“I’ve been sending him a WhatsApp message but I haven’t seen the blue check mark so I don’t know what’s going on,” Berhalter said in his pre-match press conference.
‘We took a kind of break. We will resume our relationship the day after tomorrow.
England are considered the favorites to top Pool B, among the frontrunners to go all the way, and therefore envisioned beating USMNT at 2pm EST on Friday.

Southgate’s side defeated Iran 6-2 in their opener in Qatar earlier this week, while Gareth Bale denied the USA all three points in a 1-1 draw with Wales.
USA’s top scorer in Monday’s game, Timothy Weah, said being an underdog is nothing new for the team, while Berhalter rallied his squad to win any game.
“I think on our best day we can beat anybody in the world, anybody,” he said.
‘It’s a great honor to play in the World Cup, but we don’t want to be just participants. We want to act.
“We believe that the first step is to leave the group. And the second step is, in the knockout games, to play our best game and see how far we can go.’
