One miner has died and another is fighting for his life after a serious accident at the site.

It is understood the two men were working above ground on a conveyor belt at the Oaky Creek coal mine in central Queensland when a cable snapped and hit them on Wednesday afternoon.

The man who died was reported to be in his 30s.

A man in his 20s was airlifted to Rockhampton hospital with a head injury and multiple fractures, the courier mail reported.

The accident at the site run by operator Glencore was confirmed by a Resources Safety and Health Queensland spokeswoman.

He said it was too early to give more details about what happened, but said the agency was investigating.

Oaky Creek Coal is located between the towns of Tieri and Middlemount in Queensland’s Bowen Basin and is 90 kilometers northwest of Emerald.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Glencore for comment.

The latest accident adds to a shocking year for mine workers in central Queensland.

John Linwood, 56, a Bundaberg man, died at the Byerwen coal mine, near Glenden, west of Mackay, central Queensland, after being crushed under a haulage truck at 1pm on August 24.

Just three weeks earlier, Chris Schloss, 48, a father of five, died at the same location when he was struck by a crane.

In January, Luke O’Brien, 27, was fatally injured after becoming trapped between two vehicles in the fuel rod area at the Saraji mine in Dysart.
