Two women found dead at the bottom of a cliff in Sussex conspired in a suicide pact, local reports suggest.

The bodies were recovered from lifeboats, and the coastguard helicopter scrambled to the cliffs at the popular resort of Peacehaven yesterday.

The two women – who are not believed to be from the area – have not been formally identified.

Residents say the women jumped together from the top of Rushey Hill as part of a pact.

The area along the south coast is close to Beachy Head.

A resident said, “It is absolutely tragic. They are thought to have jumped together and were found on the beach below.

“My heart goes out to their families. I just hope it’s not related to coronavirus, like they’ve been robbed or something. ‘

The women were pronounced dead on the spot, Sussex police said. A spokesman confirmed that the bodies were recovered from the cliffs yesterday.

They said yesterday: “Sussex police, assisted by the Coast Guard, this morning picked up the bodies of two women from the cliffs at The Highway in Peacehaven.

A Coast Guard spokesman said Monday: “HM Coast Guard assisted Sussex police this morning in an incident at Rushy Hill, Peacehaven.

“Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Team, Newhaven RNLI lifeboat and HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter were dispatched from Lydd.”
