Woman with longest eyelashes in the world breaks own record with 8-inch eyelash ‘gifted by Buddha’
- You Jianzia, from China, originally set the Guinness World Record in 2016 when her eyelash was 12.5cm.
- But now her lashes have almost doubled in length, with one of 20 cm
- Doctors are baffled by the condition, but Jianzia believes it is a ‘gift from Buddha’
A woman in China with the longest eyelashes in the world has broken her own record with an astonishing 20cm eyelash that she says was a gift from Buddha.
You Jianzia, from the southern city of Changzhou, originally set the Guinness World Record in 2016 when her eyelash measured 4.88 inches (12.5 cm).
But five years later, her lashes have nearly doubled in length, and one on her upper left eyelid has hit a new record of 20.5cm.
Doctors are baffled by her condition, which sees her eyelashes now falling down her cheeks and even her jaw.
But Jianzia believes her long eyelashes are a “gift from the Buddha” after spending a year and a half in the mountains on a nature retreat.

You Jianzia, from the southern city of Changzhou, originally set the Guinness World Record in 2016 when her eyelash was 12.5cm.
“I first realized my lashes were growing in 2015,” she said. ‘They keep growing slowly, getting longer and longer.
“I did visit medical professionals to find out why my eyelashes are longer than others. The doctor couldn’t explain this, and he really loved it.
‘I also tried to find scientific reasons, like genes or something else. None of my relatives have long eyelashes like I do, though, so there’s no explaining that.”
Jianxia has now said it may be divine intervention rather than science.
“I kept thinking about why I have such long eyelashes, and then I remembered that I had spent more than 480 days in the mountains years ago.”
“So I told myself that my eyelashes must be a gift from the Buddha.”

Jianxia added that the long eyelashes made her look younger and made her body stronger.
‘Maybe there are connections between my long eyelashes and a stronger body. I am quite healthy now, but when I was born I was relatively weak. Now I feel pretty good and a lot of people think I look younger.’
Despite her eight-inch lashes falling across her face, Jianxia said they don’t affect her everyday life — even saving her time when she’s applying makeup.
‘Thanks to my naturally long lashes, I don’t have to wear eyeshadow or eyeliner. My natural long lashes act as the long eyeliner.’
‘Because my lashes are natural, I find it easy to wash my face and go about my daily life. They fall out and grow back. Sometimes they break if you pull them carelessly. That’s not a problem, because they are still growing. They are now several centimeters longer than they were five years ago.
‘In my daily life, my eyelashes do not bring any worries or difficulties. Just a lot of fun. Only pleasures, no problems.’
“I would like to say to other people of unique beauty: let’s rejoice and encourage happiness together,” she added.
