A woman has died and a child was injured in a sexual assault in southeast Melbourne, in which police arrested a man who was also found with injuries.

The three people were found with serious injuries around 1 p.m. Monday, including a woman with critical wounds at a property in Narre Warren.

The woman later died in hospital, police said.

The injured is understood to mean a three-year-old child who is now in a stable condition.

They were taken to hospital, along with the man who was arrested on the spot after he too was seriously injured.

He remains under police guard.

Authorities are not looking for anyone else about the incident and the investigation is ongoing.
