A woman has been charged with torturing a one-year-old girl, as police allege she posted videos of the abuse in a bid to gain donations and online followers.
Queensland Police allege a 34-year-old Sunshine Coast woman gave the child several unauthorized prescription drugs.
The alleged abuse was detected and reported to police at a south Brisbane hospital after the boy was admitted.
“While the child was subject to immense distress and pain, the woman is alleged to have filmed and posted videos of the child,” Queensland Police said.
“It is alleged that the content produced exploited the child and was used to attract monetary donations and online followers.”
Detectives from the Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU) arrested the woman on Thursday morning.
She was charged with five counts of administering poison with intent to harm, three counts of preparing to commit offenses involving dangerous things and one count each of torture, converting child exploitation into material and fraud.
Detective Inspector Paul Dalton said crimes such as those reported were abhorrent.
The alleged abuse was detected and reported to police at a south Brisbane hospital after the boy was admitted.
“Working at CPIU, we are too often confronted with the worst crimes against children,” he said.
‘We will do everything in our power to get that child out of harm’s way and hold any offenders accountable.
“There is no excuse for harming a child, especially a one-year-old baby who depends on others for his care and survival.”
The woman is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
