A diver was bitten by a shark off the coast of Western Australia.

The woman was swimming near Rat Island in the Abrolhos Islands, about 80 kilometres west of Geraldton, when she was attacked.

His condition is unknown.

It is unclear what species of shark was involved in the attack.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is working to rescue the woman.

The attack comes a week after surfer Kai McKenzie suffered a leg amputation after being bitten by a shark at a beach in New South Wales.
