Woman, 44, has a baby after three failed IVF attempts when a man with sperm cells takes a supplement
A few were naturally conceived after three failed attempts at IVF – after they both started taking a supplement.
Karen O & Brien, 44, had been trying to have a baby with her partner, Allan Kennedy, for about five years before finally getting pregnant.
The Dublin couple claimed that doctors in fertility clinics had insisted that Mrs. O & # 39; Brien & # 39; the problem & # 39; was before they said their lack of happiness & # 39; inexplicable & # 39; used to be.
Finally, a test revealed that Mr Kennedy's sperm was damaged at the genetic level – a term known as DNA fragmentation.
At this point, specialists said that because Mrs. O & # 39; Brien & # 39; old & # 39; wax, the couple should handle thousands of pounds for more treatment.
Because there were no more options, they sought a more natural approach and were advised to take Proceive supplements.
Within a year they were the first time they became parents and in October 2018 they gave birth to the wonder baby Erin. She weighed 13 kilos.

The couple, from Ireland, claimed that doctors in fertility clinics had insisted that Mrs. O & # 39; Brien & # 39; the problem & # 39; before they claimed that their lack of luck was & # 39; inexplicable & # 39; used to be. Pictured on Christmas 2018

Mrs. O & Brien, a dog caretaker, said: & # 39; We couldn't help but this was the problem all along, but nobody had tested Allan thoroughly.
& # 39; We were so excited when we got pregnant. & # 39;
When Kennedy returned to Dublin after working for five years in an online recruitment company abroad, the couple seized the opportunity to get married and try a baby.
Mrs. O & # 39; Brien, then 39 years old, said: & # 39; I knew I was a little older than other mothers who were first mothers.
& # 39; But both Allan (then 41) and I still thought it would happen someday. But that didn't happen and then we knew we had to look at other options. However, I did not panic, I am generally quite a calm person. & # 39;
At the age of 40 in 2014 and still not pregnant, Mrs. O & # 39; Brien and Kennedy decided to try IVF.
The process started with the basic – Mrs. O & # 39; Brien was asked about her overall health, but the couple claims that Mr. Kennedy has not been asked.
He received a standard test of the sperm motility – looking at the sperm movement, shape and number – that normally returned.
Mrs. O & # 39; Brien said: & # 39; I didn't think about it then, but in hindsight it was strange that they didn't even think his fertility could be a problem. & # 39;
WHAT CAUSES DAMAGED SPERM?
Sperm DNA fragmentation is when the sperm DNA, which has information about how to fertilize an egg and can subsequently produce an embryo, is damaged.
This happens either when sperm is produced in the testes, when it is vulnerable to too much heat, for example, or when it is stored for ejaculation.
High levels of sperm DNA fragmentation can delay natural conception, lead to repeated miscarriages and reduce the success of fertility treatments such as IVF.
DNA fragmentation is usually caused by oxidative stress, which produces free radicals that attack the DNA molecule, causing breaks in the DNA strands.
Sperm DNA fragmentation is often associated with underlying medical conditions, age, or certain lifestyle choices, including smoking, drinking alcohol, poor diet, recreational drug use, dody build-up supplements, and sexually transmitted infections.
Mrs. O & Brien was set to IVF after receiving a healthy result from a HyCoSy test, which checks that the fallopian tubes are not blocked or damaged.
Despite the fact that Mrs. O & # 39; Brien at the age of 41 a & # 39; geriatric patient & # 39; , the clinic was able to collect 13 eggs, 9 of which were fertilized, and six of them became healthy embryos.
Unfortunately, Mrs. O & # 39; Brien did not become pregnant. At the age of 41, according to the NHS, there is a nine percent chance of having a baby. The chance of a pregnancy after the age of 42 is considerably lower than in younger women.
Mrs. O & # 39; Brien said: & # 39; It felt like we were in a production line – very impersonal. I also have a huge phobia of needles, so all injections were a nightmare for me.
& # 39; We were both very disappointed because we had collected a large number of eggs and it looked positive.
She added: & # 39; The approach with all clinics is: "It didn't work, let's do it again." They don't look for a reason why they just say it's bad luck.
& # 39; Allan was worse than me because he could not understand what had gone wrong. We were both determined not to give up. & # 39;
They went to another clinic in 2015, where two more expensive IVF cycles failed.
At this point, the couple were told that they were part of the 20 percent unsuccessful IVF treatment, 40 percent of the cases being due to the female and the other 40 percent to the male.
They had used the PICSI method, a more expensive form of IVF, which selects the healthiest sperm for the egg, sometimes used when the woman is considered to have weak eggs.
After three failed rounds of PICSI, the couple insisted on a DNA fragmentation test, after Mrs. O & # 39; Brien read about it online.
The test can determine if there are abnormalities in the DNA of the sperm, mainly that it is broken and therefore & # 39; fragile & # 39 ;.
High DNA damage can influence the chance of success of conception and normal embryo development, and with IVF there is some evidence that this influences the implantation rates in mouse studies.
Mrs. O & Brien and her husband would have to pay an additional € 350 (£ 311 / $ 396) on top of the € 6,000 (£ 5,333 / $ 6,796) per IVF cycle and flow of blood tests and medication she already received.
But the results changed everything – Mr. Kennedy had a high DNA fragmentation in his sperm with a speed of 47 percent. High DNA damage is considered between 11 and 57 percent.
Mrs. O & # 39; Brien claims that the IVF clinics did not offer her husband enough testing. A DNA fragmentation test eventually revealed that his sperm was damaged
Mrs. O & # 39; Brien claims that the third clinic dismissed DNA fragmentation as an issue and stressed that she needed treatment. They said the couple would have to pay for a donor egg, at which time they took a more natural approach. Pictured with Erin who was born in October 2018
Mrs. O & # 39; Brien said: & The more we have examined ourselves, the more we have discovered about the available tests for both men and women. Nobody told us. & # 39;
In a third IVF clinic, Mrs. O & # 39; Brien claims that the clinic has dealt with DNA fragmentation as an issue and insisted that she needed treatment.
She said: & # 39; The doctor argued that I was too old for IVF treatment with my own eggs and refused to carry out further treatment unless we had agreed to leave the donor egg route.
& # 39; The minimum price for this was at least a little more than £ 11,000 (€ 12,370 / $ 14,000). At this point we have decided to give up IVF and look for a more natural alternative. & # 39;
Mrs. O & Brien and her husband made an appointment with Dr. Phil Boyle, who specializes in restorative reproductive medicine at Neo Fertility Clinic.
Dr. Boyle assessed the couple's existing test results and told them to buy Proceive Max Women and Proceive Max Men without a prescription.
The supplement is designed to meet the nutritional needs of couples trying to conceive.
The couple was trained in following Mrs. O & Brien's cycles, advising which diets to follow and which exercise to take.
About a year later, Mrs. O & # 39; Brien was pregnant. Two weeks after Mrs. O & Brien's 44th birthday, Erin was born in October 2018, a healthy 13-kilo girl.
Dr. Boyle said: & With more than 30 customized vitamins and minerals specially chosen to support both the female and male reproductive systems, Proceive is the most comprehensive and specialized formulation I have had in my 20 plus years as a fertility specialist have met. & # 39;
Approximately 31 percent of couples who had previously had unsuccessful IVF had finally had babies after using Proceive, according to 403 couples who had been assessed by Dr. Boyle and colleagues from the International Institute for Restorative Reproductive Medicine.
WHAT IS MISSION?
Proceive contains a mix of 33 ingredients, including amino acids, vitamins and minerals.
According to the manufacturers, this combination offers the optimum conditions for a successful conception. Proceive for men contains selenium, which has been shown to improve sperm motility in men.
Scientific data from more than 600 studies were used to help fertility experts agree on compound mixing.
However, scientific studies have never been conducted with regard to Proceive itself, which means that the effects have not yet to be confirmed.
Although the makers are adamant, dozens of couples contacted them about having children after they tried the supplement.
The supplements, which cost £ 24.95 for 30 bags, can be purchased online and are also sold in Holland & Barrett.

Dr. Phil Boyle, director of Neo Fertility Clinic, Dublin, and president of the International Institute for Restorative Reproductive Medicine, said: “When couples came to my clinic, they might have been trying to conceive for months, even years.
& # 39; Although they may have made positive lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking or losing weight, they may fail to change their diet.
Zelfs Even those who follow a healthy and balanced diet may need additional nutritional support because they are missing some essential vitamins and minerals that are essential for pregnancy without knowing it.
Bij When trying for a baby, it is important to remember that it may take longer than expected.
& # 39; There are a number of factors that can influence your chances of conception, but supporting your diet with a comprehensive and specialized fertility supplement is a positive step to take to help you become pregnant.
