The Sun's DiJonai Carrington slammed the meme

Connecticut Sun star DiJonai Carrington lashed out at an internet troll’s “sick” George Floyd meme after complaining about Indiana Fever fans in Wednesday’s loss to Caitlin Clark & Co.

“Imagine thinking George Floyd’s murder is a joke,” Carrington wrote on X after the Sun fell 84-80 in Indianapolis. “All because of a basketball game. This is so sick.”

The manipulated image shows the infamous 2020 killing of Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who has since been convicted and sentenced to 22 years in prison. Only instead of the officer, Clark’s smiling face appears superimposed over Chauvin’s, while Carrington’s photo appears pasted over the dying Floyd’s head.

Created by a paying subscriber of X, the inflammatory meme came in response to Carrington’s criticism of Fever fans: “Indiana Fever has the nastiest fans on the internet.”

Whether fair or not, the shocking meme may have confirmed Carrington’s thoughts about Fever fans in the minds of others.

“Typical Indianapolis fan behavior,” one follower replied. “Just like she said.”

Another added: “Just say you hate black women and move on.”

Floyd’s 2020 killing remains a hot topic after the Hennepin County Medical Examiner concluded that he died of “cardiopulmonary arrest” due to “law enforcement subdual, restraint, and neck compression.”

In 2023, social media users shared a single page of the medical examiner’s report to suggest that Floyd actually died from a drug overdose. But while he had fentanyl and methamphetamine in his system, he did not die from the drugs, as expert witnesses testified during Chauvin’s trial in 2021.

Three other Minneapolis police officers were sentenced to prison for violating Floyd’s civil rights and failing to restrain Chauvin.

The ugly meme followed a disappointing loss for Carrington and the Sun, a second-place team that entered the night with a 3-0 record against Clark and the Fever this season.

However, Wednesday night was a different story as Clark set a WNBA rookie record for three-pointers made by surpassing Rhyne Howard’s 85 in 2022. She would finish the night with 19 points and five assists, while Indiana’s Kelsey Mitchell led all scorers with 23.

Carrington played well, scoring a team-high 19 points and adding six steals, but was just 1 of 5 from deep and was in foul trouble in the fourth quarter.

She was seen silencing the crowd after hitting her only three-pointer of the night, only for Clark to reignite the arena by hitting a three-pointer of her own on the next possession.

Indiana (15-16) advances to face Angel Reese and the Sky in Chicago on Saturday night, while Connecticut (22-8) heads to Washington for a Sunday matinee with the Mystics.
