Iranian diplomat Assadollah Assadi, who was imprisoned in Belgium, arrived in Tehran after a prisoner exchange deal in which Iran released Belgian aid worker Olivier Vandecastel, 15 months after his arrest.
Asadi, who is imprisoned on terrorism-related charges, arrived in the Iranian capital, after an exchange that took place in Oman.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian had announced that Belgium had released diplomat Asadi, who was sentenced in 2021 to 20 years in prison after being convicted of “terrorist assassination attempts” on charges of planning to target a meeting of the Iranian opposition in France in 2018.
