After a bloody battle that lasted for nearly nine months, by members of the “Wagner” special military group, with the support of the Russian forces, pictures published by the “TASS” news agency documented the extent of the destruction in the city of Bakhmut.
A video clip, published by the Russian news agency “Tass” on Sunday, showed the massive scale of destruction in the city of Bakhmut, whose buildings were completely destroyed by the war that has been raging for more than nine months.
The 400-year-old city has been turned into a ghost town. It was of limited strategic importance, but it gained great symbolic importance due to the long duration of the battles around it.
The Russian private military group, Wagner, began handing over its positions to the Russian regular forces last week, after declaring full control of Bakhmut, following the longest and bloodiest battles of the war.
Violent explosions rocked early Sunday morning, the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, at a time when Russian forces eased their attack on Bakhmut with the aim of reorganizing their ranks and strengthening their capabilities, while the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said that its forces managed to repel 21 Russian attacks during last 24 hours.
Senior Ukrainian officials have indicated in separate statements that their forces are ready to launch a long-awaited counter-offensive to recapture territories occupied by Russia since the beginning of the war.
