El Salvador’s National Civil Police said in a first report that 12 fans were confirmed killed in the match between Alianza and Fez at the Monumental Stadium in the city of Cuscatlan, about 25 miles (41 kilometers) northeast of the capital, San Salvador.
At least 12 people were killed and dozens injured when soccer fans stormed one of the entrance gates to a Salvadoran league match on Saturday.
El Salvador’s National Civil Police said in a first report that 12 fans were confirmed killed in the match between Alianza and Fez at the Monumental Stadium in the city of Cuscatlan, about 25 miles (41 kilometers) northeast of the capital, San Salvador.
Police said at least two of the injured, who were taken to hospitals, were in critical condition.
The match was suspended and not completed due to the events.
Local television broadcast live images of the stampede of Alianza fans. Dozens arrived at the square, where they received medical treatment.
Fans who survived the stampede stood on the field furiously waving their shirts, trying to revive people who lay on the grass barely moving.
The Salvadoran Football Federation said in a statement that it regretted what had happened and expressed its support for the families of the victims.
