With the tap-to-use student ID & # 39; s, students can buy food and badges in their dorms

Today's students rely on their identity card for almost everything, including using it to go to the gym or to buy the beloved turkey-avocado sandwich from the cafeteria. That means losing their ID can make campus navigation difficult, and maps can be difficult to replace. Now Apple has a way for students to integrate their ID cards into their iPhones and Apple Watches so that they can buy a sandwich without needing their physical card. Apple is extending the program to 12 universities so that more students can use the technology.

This is how the virtual card looks in practice:

The expansion comes as Apple makes more use of Apple Pay and Wallet, including the launch of the Apple Card last week and a test that allows commuters to use Apple Pay at some bus and subway stations in the MTA of New York City. Apple wants to encourage users to take over Apple's payment services and find it more difficult to leave Apple's walled garden. Apple said in July that iPhone sales are now less than half of Apple's revenues, so the company needs its growing service business to bring in the money that the iPhone business doesn't.

Three universities initially supported Apple Wallet ID cards when the feature was launched in October, and more have since added support. Here is the full list of universities that Apple says they will support technology this school year:

  • Arkansas State University
  • Chowan University
  • Clemson University
  • Duke university
  • Georgetown University
  • Johns Hopkins University
  • Louisburg College
  • Marshall University
  • Mercer University
  • Norfolk State University
  • South Dakota State University
  • Temple University
  • University of Alabama
  • University of North Alabama
  • University of Oklahoma
  • University of Kentucky
  • University of San Francisco
  • University of Tennessee
  • University of Vermont

I know there were a few times that I appreciated the fact that I could buy that turkey-avocado sandwich when I forgot to bring my ID to the campus.
