With Ponds out, No. 24 St. John 79-71 loses from DePaul

NEW YORK (AP) – Femi Olujobi had 27 points and eight rebounds in his homecoming in New York and DePaul withdrew from number 24 St. John & # 39; s and defeated the short-handed Red Storm 79-71 on Saturday night for the first victory on a ranked team in almost three years.

Observatory Shamorie Ponds was out with a low back-load for St. John's (14-3, 2-3 Big East), who lost his second consecutive game for the first time in four years since joining for the first time in the AP Top 25 established.

Paul Reed added 18 runs and 10 rebounds to the Blue Demons (10-5, 2-2), who threw a 17-game slip against ranked opponents dating from a victory over No. 1. 11 Providence in February 2016. The last time the Blue Demons defeated a ranked enemy on the road was a season earlier on No. 24 Seton Hall.

Max Strus had 14 points and 12 rebounds for DePaul, who won twice in a row after a slide with three games. Eli Cain also scored 14.

Olujobi, from the nearby Long Island, was a force inside and photographed 11 out of 19 in 34 minutes.

LJ Figueroa led the Red Storm with 23 points. Justin Simon scored 20 and Marvin Clark had 14 on 6-of-16 shooting, of which 1 for 7 from 3-point range.

He played in Carnesecca Arena on campus and St. John's floot 21 errors to nine for DePaul. Red Storm coach Chris Mullin flashed his anger and was summoned for a technical with 5:04 remaining.

DePaul shot 17 out of 28 on the free-throw line, while St. John's was 4 for 6.

HELPFUL FEELING

Bryan Trimble Jr. began instead of ponds, which quietly looked from the couch in sweat pants and a red polo shirt. The junior guard, the preseason player of the year, is third in the competition by scoring 20.6 points per game. He is the first in assists (6.0) and steals (2.7), and was one of the 25 players in the country that was selected this week for the mid-season list for the Wooden Award.

St. John's said ponds initially got injured in Georgetown last Saturday when he scored 37 points during an overtime win. He played through the problem and had 23 points on Tuesday-evening in a 76-71 loss on defending national champion Villanova.

Ponds were all 16 games started this season. St. John & # 39; s went without a 1-2 last season.

HONEST HISTORY

St. John's honored late-star Solly Walker, the first black player to wear a varsity uniform at the school. Walker helped guide St. John's to the NCAA championship game from 1952 and the NIT title game of 1953 and was admitted in 1993 to the University's athletic Hall of Fame. His family attended a ceremony to announce the newly created Solly Walker Academic Support Services Fund and the dedication of the Solly Walker Academic Study Hall.
