Winona Ryder has made the unusual decision to speak openly about her personal life.
While posing for the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine, the 52-year-old actress (born Winona Laura Horowitz) opened up about her high-profile love life.
The queen of the 90s screen admitted that she had two disastrous relationships in her past. She doesn’t mention names, but two of her most prominent suitors were Johnny Depp and Matt Damon. She also had romances with David Duchovny, Val Kilmer and Pete Yorn.
But the Stranger Things actress shared with writer Thessaly La Force that she’s been much happier in recent years with her current boyfriend Scott Mackinlay Hahn, founder of sustainable organic cotton company, Loomstate.
They have been together for 14 years.
And she feels ‘lucky’ to have met such a great man, added the star who is doing a remake of Tom Burton’s Beetlejuice.
Winona Ryder has taken the rare step of speaking openly about her personal life. While posing for the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine, the 52-year-old actress, whose real name was Winona Laura Horowitz, opened up about her high-profile love life.
“He’s fantastic. He really is. I’m very lucky,” Ryder said of Scott, whom she often sees at Hollywood events.
She is now reprising her character, Lydia Deetz, for the upcoming sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
“I felt bad for her,” he explained.
Lydia Deetz reminds Ryder of a younger version of herself, she noted:
“When I was 30, I had two disastrous relationships that weren’t bad, but this was before I thought of Googling someone,” she said.
“When I look back, I think, ‘What the hell was I thinking? ‘”
“I was dating the kind of person who only tells you after a few weeks that he’s in a relationship with someone else. And you’re just like, ‘What the hell?'”
She also spoke about her harrowing diaries.
“You write clearly when you’re depressed or upset,” the Petaluma native shared.
“I tend not to write when I’m really happy,” he added.
“I was looking through them and wondering, ‘How?’ I was clearly trying to deal with…”
She later said: “It was very sad. I was trying to believe the best and be understanding with myself, but I was caring about everything but myself.”
He also spoke about his meeting with Burton.
‘I was sitting there and a guy came in with a folder in his hand. I thought he was a messenger or something. We started talking about Edward Gorey. After about half an hour of conversation, I felt like I was making a friend and I asked him, ‘Do you know Tim Burton? This is his office, right? ‘ And he said, ‘Well, that’s me. ‘ I didn’t know directors could look like Tim.

‘I was 27. I immediately thought, ‘Oh, shit. I’m sorry. Do you want me to read it? ‘ He said no. I remember thinking, ‘Oh, God, have I screwed up? ‘
“I was scared when I got up to leave and I thought, ‘Hey, man, it was great meeting you. Good luck, this sounds great. ‘ And I added, ‘If you want, I can come back. ‘”
“But he told me he wanted me to do it. That had never happened. I’d never been offered a role without a reading or at that point, ever.”
Burton said of her: “She probably thought I was some kind of weird stalker, but I had that effect on people. I didn’t speak very well, so people didn’t understand what I was saying.”
“Actually, they still don’t. But again, that’s why I feel like we connected, because I didn’t scare her. In the end, she got it and she understood who I am.”
She also said she feels comfortable with her success at a young age.
‘I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to live this life; as intense and overwhelming as it was, it is NOTHING compared to what it is now with the internet and social media.
“I just feel tremendous empathy for people who have sacrificed so much.”
