Wimbledon is on Saturday and for the eighth consecutive tournament since 2016 (the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic), there will be a different women’s singles champion.
Czech Barbora Krejčíková, seeded No. 31, is seeking her second Grand Slam title, having won the French Open in 2021. She will face No. 7 Jasmine Paolini, who is seeking her first Grand Slam title after finishing runner-up at the French Open earlier this year. In addition to being the first Italian woman to reach the singles final at the All-England Club, Paolini is also the first woman to reach the final of the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year since Serena Williams achieved the feat in 2016 (she lost in Paris, but won in London).
Krejčíková overcame 2022 champion Elena Rybakina, the No. 4 seed, in their semifinal meeting and Paolini beat unseeded Donna Vekic to reach Saturday’s final. Both matches were three-set thrillers, with the Paolini-Vekic match being the longest women’s semifinal match in Wimbledon history at 2 hours, 51 minutes.
31. Barbora Krejcikova vs. 7. Jasmine Paolini
