Willow Dunn’s father did not recover from her mother’s death during the delivery in Brisbane

A father accused of starving his four-year-old daughter never recovered from his wife’s death during childbirth.

Willow Dunn’s body was found malnourished and decomposing in her bed at her Brisbane home on Monday, her face partially eaten by rats.

Her father, Mark James Dunn, 43, was charged with murder after allegedly finding the toddler dead on Saturday and calling no emergency services.

Just weeks before Willow’s was born on November 5, 2015, her mom gave Naomi a birthday party for her husband in their backyard.

“We can’t wait to meet her,” Ms. Dunn wrote to a friend who noted how pregnant she was in photos of the party.

Instead, Ms. Dunn died in childbirth, causing Dunn to spiral into a downward spiral that left him depressed and struggling to cope.

Daily Mail Australia understands that Willow, who suffered from Down’s syndrome, went to live with an aunt and uncle after her mother died.

Their father took her and her brother, who is now seven, back with him a year later, despite an attempted custody attempt by the next of kin.

Dunn told police after his arrest that he couldn’t handle his daughter’s condition and was depressed about his wife’s death.

Willow Dunn (photo, in 2017) is said to have been left dead in her bed for two days, her face being attacked by rats, after horrific injuries and malnutrition

He reportedly left the helpless girl lying in her bed, starving long enough to have a sore on her hips to the bone.

Police are investigating whether Willow died of starvation and was refused medication.

Her body is said to have been found in a back bedroom in the rental house on Bent Street in Cannon Hill, where she lived with her father, stepmother and stepsister.

Willow’s stepmother and stepsister are not charged and there is no suggestion that they have done anything wrong.

Ms. Dunn also left an adult son and daughter from a previous relationship, who mourned their baby half sister on Facebook.

“Rest in peace willow. It is so heartbreaking it has become this way, but you will be in our hearts forever. Fly high with mom, ”wrote her son.

On Tuesday evening, the Department of Child Safety confirmed that it was in contact with the family regarding Willow.

LNP shadow minister Dan Purdie said the case raised “serious questions” about the competence of child protection.

“The big question in such a horrifying case of alleged neglect is how a vulnerable young child slipped through the cracks and how this could have been prevented,” he told the Courier post.

Shocked neighbors arrived on Tuesday to lay flowers for the toddler, but many said they had never seen the little girl – despite the family moving a year ago.

“They’ve been there for so long and we didn’t know a little girl lived there,” said a neighbor.

“That’s the big take-home for me. I can not believe it. ‘

Police will claim that Willow was left without food and severely malnourished.

Her father was charged with a new definition of murder in Queensland targeting child killers, including “reckless indifference to human life.”

The case was briefly mentioned in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday, but Dunn did not appear in person and the case was adjourned until July 20.

He told police that he found Willow dead in her bed and later saw signs that she had been attacked by rats, but no one raised the alarm for two days.

A teddy bear, dressed in a Parramatta Eels sweater, was placed in the window of the family home on Tuesday, while a pram was abandoned in the front yard.

Darryl Steff, CEO of Down Syndrome Queensland, told 7News that the family had previously contacted the charity.

WHAT IS QUEENSLAND’S STRONG NEW MURDER LAW?

On May 1, 2019, Queensland passed a law to expand the definition of murder under the Queensland Criminal Code.

Now someone can be charged with murder if death is caused by “reckless indifference to human life.”

Reckless indifference is doing an act with foresight that death is likely to result from that act.

The suspect must have foreseen that the act would probably cause the death of the deceased, but continues to perform the act anyway.

“We are very sad about Willow’s death. It is unacceptable for a child to die … regardless of disability, ‘said Mr. Steff.

Minister of Child Safety Di Farmer gave no further details about the department’s contact with the family.

“The death of any child is a tragedy,” she said in a statement.

“I know that the death of this little girl had a profound impact on our community and my deepest sympathy goes to those who knew and loved this child.”

Neighbors watched in horror as the family was led out of the house Monday morning with other young children to speak to the detectives.

Senior detectives, two ambulances, and a fleet of police cars came to the house after the grim discovery and immediately set up a crime scene.

The photos taken on-site Tuesday morning show that the investigators had returned to take forensic smears and further investigate the family home.

In front of the property was an abandoned stroller with a small basketball-shaped toy on the handle.

The police had taped the area around the stroller.

A smiling teddy bear was also seen in a house windshield above a sign that read “Mark’s.”

The teddy bear was dressed in a Parramatta Eels NRL jersey.

Detectives are still working to determine how Willow died and investigate whether she was starving.

She also wouldn’t have been given crucial medications, Seven News reported.

On Monday, just after 9:00 am, a call was made with the Queensland Ambulance Service.

An SUV with green ‘P’ signs was in the driveway on Tuesday morning, as were camping chairs across the lawn.

A resident, Kathy Cowell, came to lay flowers outside the house in honor of Willow.

“It’s just a sad way for a little girl to go,” she told 10 News.

“I have grandchildren, it’s just really sad. No four-year-old deserves to succeed like this. ‘

A neighbor said a family rented the house on a quiet suburban street.

“I never heard much from them. It’s a fairly quiet street … it’s a bit of a shock, ‘said the resident.

Parents of a nearby school, Cannon Hill Anglican College, were sure there was no threat to other children.

“If you hear about the incident through the media, make sure there is no reason to fear any threat to the school,” an email to parents read.

“Your children are safe and completely unaware of the police presence outside the college.”
