Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has warned that the agreement between the United States and South Korea to strengthen the nuclear deterrence against Pyongyang will only lead to “an even more grave danger.” Washington and Seoul warned North Korea on Wednesday that any nuclear attack it would “lead to the end” of its regime.
The powerful sister of the North Korean leader responded to this threat, saying that North Korea is convinced of the need to “further improve” its nuclear deterrence program, according to statements carried by the North’s KCNA news agency Saturday.
“The more enemies insist on conducting nuclear exercises, the more they deploy nuclear weapons near the Korean Peninsula, and our exercise of our right to self-defense becomes stronger in direct proportion to them,” Kim Yo Jong said.
South Korean President Yun Sok Yul and his US counterpart, Joe Biden, on Wednesday adopted the “Washington Declaration”, which greatly enhances their cooperation in defense matters, including nuclear.
The measures decided under this declaration include sending an American nuclear submarine to South Korean waters, which has not happened since the eighties of the twentieth century, and other measures, including sharing more information in the event of a North Korean attack.
Kim Yo Jong added that this declaration “will only contribute to exposing peace and security in Northeast Asia and the world to greater danger, and therefore it is an act that cannot be welcomed in any way.”
