A driver in his 70s survived a horrific accident after driving his car over a 20-metre-high cliff onto the road.

Emergency services were called shortly after 10am on Monday after the white Hyundai i30 hatchback fell off a cliff in the inner west Sydney suburb of Glebe.

NSW Police and NSW Fire and Rescue arrived to find the wrecked car next to a pile of glass, debris and broken branches on Railway Street.

Miraculously, the occupant was still alive after his car fell a few meters from Darghan Street.

Railroad worker Craig Klineberg was sitting in his car nearby when he heard a noise “like a train crash,” and seconds later another sound “like thunder.”

“The driver was lying in the passenger seat and not moving. His face was pressed against the side of the car,” he said.

Klineberg ran to the crashed car as others called for help and found the man mumbling..

“I was glad I got a word out of him, he just did it every 30 seconds and then the police showed up,” he told Sydney Morning Herald.

The man, who lives in the area, was visiting his friend Sylvia Sagi and she had to accompany him to a medical appointment.

Instead, he was taken by ambulance to the nearby Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. The extent of his injuries is still unknown.

“Yesterday he fell, hit his head and should have gone to the hospital at that time, but he refused, and I think something happened as a result of that injury,” Mrs Sagi said.
