Anthony Albanese has been booed by protesters.

The Prime Minister was nearly drowned during a press conference in Sorrell, north-east of Hobart in Tasmania, by protesters who were reported to have chanted “Shame on Albanians”.

Albanese, who had been fielding Rebecca White as a candidate for the marginal federal seat of Lyon, did not react or address the protesters and instead looked forward in stony silence.

He also shared the stage with Agriculture Minister Julie Collins to pledge $28 million in efforts to improve water quality and environmental conditions in Macquarie Harbour.

It is an important salmon fishing ground and the only known home of the endangered Mauge ray.

Mr Albanese said Tasmania’s salmon industry was “the backbone of many regional communities and it is essential that we support the thousands of jobs it creates across the state”.

“To achieve this, it is essential that we have a sustainable industry that supports workers and the environment,” he said.

“That’s exactly what this will help achieve: ensure we have a sustainable salmon industry and provide stability for workers and their families into the future.”

To help offset damage to the health of Macquarie Harbor caused by human activities, $21 million has been allocated to increase oxygenation in the harbour.

Another $5 million has been committed specifically to expand the Mauge ray breeding program.

More to come.
