Matt Peet has signed a historic new seven-year contract with Wigan Warriors following his incredible success as head coach so far.
The 39-year-old was promoted to the top job at the DW Stadium in October 2021, but has already won every rugby league trophy.
Peet led Wigan to Challenge Cup victory in his first season in charge, before winning the League Leaders’ Shield and Grand Final last year and the World Club Challenge last month.
Now Peet and his assistants, Sean O’Loughlin and Tommy Leuluai, have been rewarded for their efforts with contracts keeping them at the club until the end of the 2030 season.
“This commitment is a sign of the confidence that the club and the supporters have in me and our team,” Peet said.
Matt Peet enjoyed incredible success during his time as head coach of Wigan Warriors
Wigan became the second consecutive English team to win the World Club Challenge last month.
“Settling the case is fantastic. This makes me very proud. It’s a job with great responsibility and I love doing it.
“I am an inexperienced coach. My ambition is to improve and learn. I think I’m in the perfect place to do it and I have special people around me to help me.
“We want to accomplish so much more on and off the field. The fact that we’ve been signed for so long, we’re going to have to evolve. We can’t keep coaching the same way – and that’s part of the challenge we’re excited about.
Peet first worked at his hometown club Wigan in 2008 as a scholarship coach. He then managed the academy and reserves, before becoming assistant to Adrian Lam in 2019, followed by his appointment as head coach in 2021.
The Warriors are the only undefeated team in Super League so far this season with four wins from four, having won a record fifth World Club Challenge against Penrith Panthers earlier this season.
“Our coaching trio, led by Matt Peet, have not only won matches and trophies, but also the hearts of the players, fans and communities they represent,” said Wigan chief executive Kris Radlinski.
“We have three exceptional and determined coaches, hungry for success, dedicated to improvement and nurtured in a supportive and caring environment, a facet often overlooked in professional sport.
“I believe what we have created is a unique offering in the sports industry. I am convinced that these exceptional people will guide our club to new successes.
