  • Google’s software recognized a photo of her son in the background and added the video to an album to notify Kara’s mother

A Canadian woman learned the hard way how good Google Photos facial recognition software is when she automatically sent a rated-R video to her mother.

Kara Tonin shared her horror at the discovery on TikTok last week, explaining that she has set up Google Photos to share all new photos of her son with her mother.

Unfortunately, the app’s facial recognition software is so good that it spotted a photo of Kara’s son in the background of a very raunchy video she’d taken herself – and automatically notified her mother about it.

“This is a PSA for anyone using Google Photos or any other facial recognition photo app,” she began her viral video, which has received 2.8 million views so far.

So Google Photos has an incredible thing where it recognizes people’s faces, and if you type in their name it will show every photo and video with their faces in it. And then you can create an album of that person and share it with your friends and family, ”she continued.

Isn’t technology incredible? A little too damn incredible if you ask me, ‘she said.

“So Google made me a beautiful little album of my son and I shared it with my mom, so every time I upload a photo of him, my mom is notified.”

Kara clearly didn’t see how this could possibly go wrong – until it happened.

So a while ago I decided I wanted to spice things up a bit in my relationship, and I made a rated R video where I was doing unspeakable, ungodly things.

And Google Photos picked up a very small picture of my son in the background on my fridge and said, “Hey, that’s a picture of Josh. Let’s send this video to Kara’s mom,” she said.

Kara did not indicate how that conversation with her mother went, but it seems to have been quite embarrassing.

“I’m so sorry, Mom,” she said.

More than half a million people have liked Kara’s funny video, with commenters expressing both disgust and glee about her accident.

“You just showed your mother that you were trying to have another child,” one offered.

“That would be my thirteenth reason,” wrote another.

“Does anyone else bite out loud?” asked another.

“I know this is a huge shame for you, but this made my week a good one,” agreed another commenter.

One woman said her sister had experienced something similar, but luckily they were able to remove the offensive content from their mother’s phone before she saw it.

“I’m laughing to cover up the pain,” Kara replied in the comments.
