The wife of a witness in former President Trump’s impeachment trial has come under fire for mocking the latest assassination attempt on the Republican candidate.
Rachel Vindman, wife of retired Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, posted on X: “No ear damage. Get on with your Sunday afternoon.”
Vindman had pointed to the president being hit in the ear after an assassination attempt in July, two months before Sunday’s events.
Her husband had been a key witness in what led House Democrats to impeach Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in 2019.
His wife’s post has since angered high-profile Republicans, Trump campaign adviser Chris LaCivita and Donald Trump Jr.
LaCivita, confusing her husband with her brother-in-law Eugene Vindman, a Democrat running for Congress, posted: “Her husband, running for VA 7, should immediately condemn.”
Rachel Vindman, wife of retired Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, both pictured, posted a post on X mocking the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Her husband had been a key witness in what led House Democrats to impeach Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in 2019.
His wife’s post has since rankled high-profile Republicans and Trump campaign adviser Chris LaCivita. She later doubled down on her comments.
As Trump Jr. posted: ‘These people are fucking insane,’ while sharing a screenshot of the post.
Congressman Mike Lawler also rebuked Vindman, posting on X: ‘This is precisely what is wrong with our politics today.
‘Your brother-in-law is running for Congress and you’re making light of political assassination attempts? Oh my God!’
Florida Congressman Mike Waltz echoed this sentiment, adding: “Is this the position of the entire Vindman family? Especially the one running for Congress?”
While one social media user responded to Hindman by writing: “You are a horrible human being for making light of this assassination attempt on President Trump.”
After the scandal that the post generated, her husband went on the attack and responded to LaCivita’s post saying: “I condemn you.”
‘I condemn his lack of integrity, his attacks on immigrants, his desecration of Arlington National Cemetery.
“Your candidate Donald Trump has been inciting political violence for a decade. He could cool down this election cycle. But you MAGA supporters are taking advantage of intimidation. The fact is, you’re all weak.”
His wife then reaffirmed her stance and then said: “I’m sorry you got upset. No, I don’t care in the slightest.
He added: “Trump has been inciting violence against his enemies for years. He douses a situation with gasoline, lights a match and walks away without taking any responsibility.
“Look at what’s happening in Springfield, Ohio, right now, but he wants to claim to be a victim. You can’t have it both ways.”
Alexander and Rachel Vindman are seen here with their daughter in front of the White House.
The latest attempt comes after a bullet hit Donald Trump’s right ear during an assassination attempt on July 13 at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, seen here.
Vindman was a star witness during the House Select Intelligence Committee hearings during its impeachment inquiry.
Trump and other high-profile conservatives have been claiming that immigrants in the city have been eating local wild animals and pets.
Alexander Vindman later referenced this in another post on X, writing: ‘Donald Trump can really turn down the heat for the rest of the election and condemn political violence of any kind.
‘He can start by telling his supporters that it is not okay to make bomb threats against Haitians or attack immigrants or political opponents.’
Last week, Springfield City Hall had to be evacuated after receiving a bomb threat; local police said the threat was emailed to multiple agencies.
Mayor Rob Rue said the sender identified himself as a Springfield resident and mentioned his frustration with city officials regarding Haitian immigration issues.
Meanwhile, National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Mike Berg noted that President Biden had welcomed Rachel Vindman to the White House.
In a post on social media, Berg called her a “deranged lunatic” for her post and pointed to the visit that occurred in March of last year.
Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, is in custody after pointing the barrel of an AK-47 rifle at Trump while he was playing golf at his West Palm Beach, Florida, course on Sunday.
Alexander Vindman had been on a now-infamous call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Trump had asked him for help digging up dirt on President Biden’s son, Hunter, and Vindman listened to the call in his role as a National Security Council official.
He was subpoenaed to testify in Trump’s impeachment trial after reporting the contents of the call.
Vindman, born in Ukraine, served on the National Security Council alongside his twin brother Yevgeny as an expert on Ukrainian affairs. He was the Council’s director of European Affairs.
Trump fired Vindman after the impeachment attempt, which resulted in his acquittal.
On Sunday, Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was detained by police after Secret Service agents spotted a rifle barrel sticking out of a bush at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Officers opened fire, causing the gunman to flee; footage shows he left behind a backpack, a GoPro camera and an AK-47-style firearm.
When police caught up with the suspect and arrested him, they noted that he was “relatively calm” and “never asked” why he was being detained.
The assassination attempt on the former president came two months after gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks’ assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.
