Rory de Groot hopes that Feyenoord coach Arne Slot will give Mats Wieffer a chance in the starting eleven. He believes that the former FC Twente talent entails certain important qualities.
“I have said before that I am very charmed by him as a player,” he begins in conversation with Feyenoord TV. “Partly due to injuries, he has not played very much yet, but perhaps also because of the choices that are made. Every time he comes in, I see something that makes me very happy: he brings a certain calm, a certain control to the midfield. and an overview that others have less. Particularly defensively.”
“What Wieffer does very well is look at the positions, the space around him and not just at the ball,” continues De Groot. “He is constantly covering the space, he always thinks ahead, plays the ball straight through. That also gives Gimenez the opportunity and that is what Wieffer is good at: he anticipates very well, he reads the game.”
“I love to watch, a player who always thinks ahead. What is also important to me is that he has a much greater dribbling ability than people think now. In fact, he has the potential to be everything for that number six position. I don’t know whether he is ready, the substitutions are too short for that. I would like to see him as a basic player,” he concludes.
