Australian shoppers have revealed the strange reason why

Australian shoppers have revealed the crazy reason why “everyone” is ditching Kmart for Target right now.

Target’s clothing ranges have been praised as some of the best value clothing on the market, with thousands of people praising their superior design and quality.

On the other hand, customers have criticized Kmart for only releasing “fashionable” items that “wear out after a few washes.”

Both brands are owned by Westfarmers, which also owns Bunnings and Officeworks.

Target has kept its own clothing brands, such as Lily Loves, Preview and Fila, after the merger, while the home and beauty items on shelves are now from Kmart.

Target’s price range is a step above what Kmart shoppers are used to, but Australians say it’s worth shelling out the extra dollars.

‘In my experience, Target’s materials seem more durable and the designs are more refined. But Kmart does better with ‘on-trend’ home decor items, although longevity can sometimes be unpredictable,’ said one online.

‘I’ve always preferred maternity clothes from Target to Kmart. The towels are amazing,” added another.

‘Target’s clothes for babies and children were much better in quality than Kmart’s. Better feel, better use, maintained color and does not deform. Women’s clothing was also generally better,” one shopper wrote.

Target’s recent clothing lines have also gone viral on Australian fashion TikTok with thousands of women sharing their clothing purchases.

“I’m obsessed with Target’s new spring and linen collection,” said one.

“The work cabinets are simply the best,” added another. “It’s always the first place I go nowadays when I need new clothes.”

Shoppers revealed what they would most hate to lose in the Kmart-Target merger.

‘I’ve always bought our sheets at Target. “It’s been a staple forever,” one woman said. ‘I went yesterday to buy a new game and they were on clearance. Each color. I think they will be replaced by Anko very soon.’

Another added: ‘Target better not lose its own brand of towels and sheets. “They are far superior to even the most expensive Kmart brand.”

‘I have found that Target clothing is still better quality than the Kmart brand. I have some things since the change,” one shared.

One shopper shared that the difference goes beyond the quality of the clothing.

‘What I hated about our local Kmart store at the time was the mess. Clothes were so packed on the shelves that it was impossible to search for them, so things inevitably ended up on the floor or scattered nearby. The shoes were the worst.

“In comparison, it was lovely to shop at our local Target,” she said.

In 2020, 167 Target stores permanently closed or converted to Kmarts after the chain suffered a $67 million drop in sales.

The merger came about because operating the two businesses separately made it difficult to improve Target’s use of technology.

Bailey, who is credited with leading the turnaround in Kmart’s fortunes in recent years, said merging the two outlets into one $10 billion entity will lead to significant cost savings and improved productivity.

Target staff were offered jobs at Kmart or other Wesfarmers businesses including Bunnings and Officeworks.

The closures and conversions reportedly cost the company between $120 million and $170 million.

Another $140 million was used for one-time costs of store conversions and inventory liquidation.
