A north Sydney motorist caught a new hard-to-detect ‘speed trap’ on New South Wales roads, but the state authority said the camera is used for a different purpose.
The camera, in a simple yellow box, was seen on the Warringah Highway, where work is currently taking place on the north side of the Sydney Harbor Bridge.
The sign below said: “camera under test.”
Locals shared the image on Wednesday, amazed by the strange contraption.
“Well, it’s now definitely proven that these mobile radars are being secretly tested in New South Wales,” said a self-proclaimed “radar hunter.”
Other locals were quick to point out that similar devices had been deployed elsewhere in the same area over the past week.
‘New South Wales needs money and the source of income, once again, is the motorist. “Greed knows no laws,” commented one aggrieved motorist.
But a Transport New South Wales spokeswoman quickly quashed the revenue-raising allegations.
A peculiar yellow traffic camera raised the alarm on the northern beaches this week
A Transport for NSW put the rumors to rest and said the cameras will not be used to report infringements.
“Transport for NSW has installed two traffic monitors within the roadwork zone to record traffic volume and speed for informational purposes only and to inform future planning,” he said.
“Transportation does not plan to use these cameras to report violations.”
However, he said the real reason behind the camera’s placement should not encourage drivers to speed on the busiest stretch of road.
“Transport is asking motorists to respect the temporary 60km/h speed limit at our workplace and thanks them for their patience as we continue to work on upgrading the Warringah Highway.”
Some local motorists said they wanted to be happy to see more speed cameras on that stretch of highway.
“We need a lot of them because of the driving I just witnessed,” one said.
Another said they didn’t care if more speed cameras were used in the state.
“As long as they keep demanding ‘mobile camera ahead’ signs, they can use whatever they want,” said another.
